The Lady Bulldogs began the week in Willcox cruising to a 62-31 win Dec.11.

Veronica Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 22 points, Aleen Nunez followed with 11, Janella Frantzeskakis contributed 10 and Karina Avechuco had eight.

Douglas led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and 39-22 at the half. A 18-4 third quarter run gave the Lady Bulldogs a comfortable 57-27 lead heading into the final quarter.

Douglas’ basketball coach Clint Hill said his team played well but had more turnovers than he would have liked.

The Lady Bulldogs did connect on six three’s which was nice, the coach said.

On Thursday Douglas hosted its rivals from Bisbee coming away with a 48-35 win.

Up 10-9 at the end of the first quarter the Lady Bulldogs went on a 21-3 run taking a 30-13 lead at the half.

Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 13 points, Avechuco followed with 12 and Frantzeskakis and Nunez each had eight.

The next night Douglas hosted a Cholla team that just like the Lady Bulldogs, was also 9-1.

Douglas led from the start jumping out to an 11-4 first quarter lead. Cholla clawed back to within one at 17-16 in the second quarter only to see the Lady Bulldogs close out the half with a 14-4 run taking a 31-20 lead at the half.

Douglas increased its lead to 12 in the third quarter before closing out the game with a 16-10 run coming away with a 62-44 win.

Barraza finished with 21 points this game while Avechuco had 17, Sofia Pena had eight and Frantzeskakis seven.

Coach Hill said his team is playing really well right now.

“They’re starting to see the benefits of all that hard work they’ve been putting in at practice,” he said.
