Bulldogs fall to Catalina By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch The Douglas Bulldogs had just one game last week hosting an undefeated Catalina team last Tuesday in the DHS gym. Mistakes stymied the Bulldogs in a 65-53 loss. Douglas trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and 25-17 at the half. Catalina built a 14 point lead in the third quarter and increased that lead to 17 midway through the fourth. Play had been physical all night long and with less than a minute to play and the Trojans up 65-53 a Douglas player took exception to a Catalina foul which led to a punch from the Catalina player. The benches cleared and several Catalina junior varsity players who had been in the stands watching the game even took to the court getting in on the scuffle. Once order was restored the Catalina player was ejected from the game and Douglas was awarded the technical. Eduardo Ysea and Fernando Diaz each scored 12 points to lead Douglas in scoring. Alan Arias followed with eight and Ignacio Valenzuela contributed seven. "We played very hard," Douglas' basketball coach Oscar Mariscal said. "But we didn't take care of the ball very well. If we can cut down on some mistakes we will be in a lot of games this year." The Bulldogs, 6-5, will be at the San Carlos tournament Dec. 28-29. In junior varsity play last Tuesday Douglas was defeated 55-48 while the freshmen won 67-41. |
