Lady Bulldogs win 2 of 3

The Douglas Lady Bulldogs won two of the three games they played last week.

The Lady Bulldogs began the week beating Catalina 54-30 Jan. 7 in Tucson.

Douglas led 19-8 at the end of the first quarter and 29-19 at the half. In the second half Douglas outscored Catalina 25-11.

“We were in total control and we were able to rest the starters for a expected long week,” Douglas’ basketball coach Clint Hill said. “Ten players contributed in scoring with the starters playing a limited time (in the) first and third quarters.”

Veronica Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 16 points, Karina Avechuco followed with 11, Aleen Nunez contributed nine and Nancy Rodriguez had seven.

No freshmen or junior varsity games were played against Catalina.

On Tuesday, Jan. 8 the Lady Bulldogs were in Benson playing their sixth road game in six days (Douglas played two on Thursday, Jan. 3).

Tied 21-21 at the half the Lady Bulldogs used a 22-9 third quarter run to blow the game open before outscoring the Lady Bobcats 14-10 in the fourth.

Barraza led Douglas in scoring this game with 19 points, Janella Frantzeskakis followed with eight, Nunez had seven, Sofia Pena six, Avechuco and Jocelyn Vasquez each contributed five and Rodriguez four.

The Lady Bulldogs were 5-1 during that road trip, their lone loss coming to Sabino Saturday in the finals of the Tombstone Shootout.

On Friday the Lady Bulldogs were in Sierra Vista playing the Buena Colts. Buena defeated Douglas 56-41.

Douglas trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter but was outscored 18-8 in the second as the Lady Colts took a 33-21 lead at the half.

Douglas was outscored by two in the third quarter and one in the fourth as Buena came away with a 14 point win.

Coach Hill said Buena was a very good defensive and rebounding team.

“It was 32 minutes of pressure causing 18 turnovers,” he said.

Buena is currently ranked No. 8 in Division 1 Hill said and playing the Lady Colts was a good experience for his team.

“I’m hoping we can draw a little from their defense intensity,” he said. “We have things to work on.”

Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 14 points, Frantzeskakis followed with eight and Nunez contributed seven.

Douglas, 14-3, hosted Empire on Tuesday and will be at Cienega on Thursday and Bisbee on Friday.

Junior varsity

Douglas’ junior varsity beat Cholla 20-17 Dec. 14.

Esmeralda Moreno had seven points, two assists and three steals for Douglas, Crystal Zamora five points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds; Jessica Quinonez four points, two steals and five rebounds and Britney Zuniga four points and six rebounds.

On Jan. 8 the Lady Bulldogs fell 34-32 in overtime to Benson.

Zamora scored 11 points, had five assists, three steals and three rebounds; Andrea Lugo eight points and two assists; Moreno four points, two assists and two steals; Zuniga four points and five rebounds; Quinonez three points and four rebound and Caroline Curiel two point.

“The girls continue to play well,” Coach Lorena Tapia said. “Against Benson we came out tired from the break but kept with their speed and defense.”
