On Tuesday, Jan. 8 the Bulldogs were in Benson where they fell 63-45 to the Bobcats.

Eduardo Ysea led Douglas in scoring with 17 points, Luis Padilla followed with 11.

The Bulldogs trailed by just three, 15-12, at the end of the first quarter but then allowed Benson to go on a 22-8 run in the second quarter giving the Bobcats a comfortable 37-20 lead at the half.

The two teams were even the second half each scoring 26 points showing the second quarter lapse was the difference in the game.

“We started off slow, played hard but couldn’t come back from a large deficit,” Bulldog coach Oscar Mariscal said.

No freshmen game was played vs. Benson. In junior varsity action Douglas was victorious winning 55-35. No other details were available.

The Bulldogs hosted Buena on Friday in the DHS gym and fell 66-57.

Buena led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Ysea’s three in the second quarter cut the Colts lead to 25-22. Buena went on a 11-0 run increasing its lead to 13 only to see a bucket by Oscar Hernandez cut the Colts lead to 36-25 at the half.

The Bulldogs continued to battle in the third pulling within four at 44-40. Buena went up eight with seconds remaining when Ysea drilled an awkward three pulling Douglas within five, 50-45, as the quarter ended.

Buena opened up the fourth with a 6-0 run going back up 11. The Colts increased their lead to 15, 63-47, with three minutes remaining.

Ysea led all scorers with a game high 24 points. Unfortunately he was the only Bulldog to score in double figures. Fernando Diaz, Diego Galindo and Padilla all came off the bench to follow with eight, seven and six points respectively.

Douglas’ basketball coach Oscar Mariscal said after the game he was pleased with how his kids battled against a tough Buena team.

“We haven’t seen a defense like that in a while but I thought our kids handled it well,” he said.

The Bulldogs, 8-9, were at Empire Tuesday night and will host Cienega on Thursday and Bisbee on Friday.

Both games will start at 7 p.m.

Also on Friday the Douglas freshmen dropped to 3-3 on the season following a 54-23 loss to Buena’s freshmen.

Douglas’ junior varsity fell 70-44.
