Flu epidemic continues in Douglas

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services there has been a widespread activity of influenza in Arizona for the last three weeks.

In Cochise County there have been 136 reported cases. Out of those 136 cases 42 are from Douglas.

Flu symptoms can range from high fever (100-102 degrees) that last three to four days, headaches, general aches and pains. Fatigue and weakness that can last up to two to three weeks and chest discomfort with coughing.

The best prevention for the flu recommended by the health department is to get an annual flu shot.

The Chiricahua Pediatric Center of Excellence, located at 815 15th Street, will be holding a free flu clinic on this Saturday, Feb. 2 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This service is available for free to children six months to 18 years of age.

The Douglas Family Health provides free shots to anyone Monday thru Friday from 8 – 11 a.m. and 1- 4 p.m.

Both clinics ask that you not be sick and to be advised the flu shot takes up to two weeks to start working.

The flu shot also protects you from getting the flu again if you have already had it.

With or without a flu shot, good health habits are a way for every Douglas resident to help themselves and those around them stay healthy:

· Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

· Avoid close contact.

· Stay home when you are sick.

· Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze but not with your hands.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

· Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
