DHS grapplers honor seniors in final home meet

The Douglas High School wrestling team honored its seven graduating seniors prior to taking the mat for a tri-meet with Walden Grove and Salpointe last Wednesday.

Against Walden Grove the Bulldogs posted a 72-6 win. Most of the matches were won by forfeit as only two of the 14 DHS wrestlers wrestled.

At 145 Hector Vasquez pinned his opponent in 1:45 while at 182 Carlos Estrada pinned his opponent in 1:35

Thomas Cardenas (106), Rogelio Martinez (113), Cristian Ross (120), Jacob Ybarra (132), Jacob Ontiveros (138), Raymond Alvarez (152), Brandon Moreno (160), David Vasquez (170), James Briseno (195), Roly Ruiz (220) and Nick Leigh (285) all won by forfeit.

Both Douglas and Walden Grove forfeited weight class 126 and the Bulldogs also forfeited 138 giving Walden Grove its lone points of the match.

The Bulldogs then moved on to face Salpointe who came away with a 60-24 win.

Cardenas began the match giving Douglas a win by forfeit at 106.

Martinez was then pinned in 2:51 at 113; Ross was pinned in 5:13 at 120 and the Lancers picked up a win by forfeit at 126 and also at 138.

Ybarra was pinned in 60 seconds at 132; Armando Vasquez was pinned in 2:51 at 145.

Alvarez overcame an illegal slam at the start of his 152 pound match to finish very aggressively and impressively pinning his Salpointe opponent in 3:43.

Moreno was pinned in 5:03 at 160 and David Vasquez needed jus 32 seconds to show his Salpointe opponent the lights at 170.

Estrada won by forfeit at 182; Briseno was pinned in 3:12 at 195; Ruiz was pinned in 1:14 at 220 and Leigh was pinned in 1:41 at 285.

The DHS seniors who were honored along with their parents prior to the match were Joe Alvarez, Brandon Cardenas, Nick Leigh, Brandon Moreno, Robert Romero, Roly Ruiz and Jacob Ybarra.

The Bulldog matmen close out the regular season today with a triangular match in Tucson with Amphi and CDO.
