The Douglas Bulldog basketball team closed out the home portion of their schedule last week beating a team that had beaten them earlier during their six-game skid.

The Benson Bobcats came to Douglas Jan. 22 looking to extend Douglas’ losing streak. The Bulldogs last win came at the San Carlos tournament where the Dogs went 2-2 losing their last game of the tournament. During the skid they lost their rematch with Bisbee in addition to falling to Buena, Cienega, Empire while also falling 63-45 Jan. 8 to the same Benson team they were hosting on Mom and Dads night for the DHS seniors.

This game was close throughout but the Bulldogs would prevail in the end winning by four.

Douglas led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 15-18 in the second when Eduardo Ysea hit back to back three’s plus a free-throw after being fouled on one of the threes giving the Dogs a 22-18 lead.

Nick Menduette’ bucket with 4:20 remaining in the first half padded Douglas’ lead to eight.

Benson responded with a 7-2 run pulling within tree. Ysea’s three ended that run and pushed the Bulldogs back up as to a 35-29 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Benson cut the lead to two but never could take the lead as the Dogs led 51-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Benson opened up the fourth with a 6-0 run to go up by one. Douglas responded with a 7-0 run to go back up six with two minutes to go.

Ysea’s pair gave Douglas an eight point lead matching its largest lead of the night.

Benson clawed back to within four, 65-61, as time expired.

Benson’s Sean Grogan torched Douglas for a game high 32 points.

Ysea led Douglas in scoring with 19 points. Menduette followed with 14, Ignacio Valenzuela had 10 and Diego Galindo seven.

On Friday the Bulldogs beat Tombstone at Tombstone 67-58.

Douglas led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter and 36-24 at the half.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 59-43 in the second half.

Tombstone hit a three at the buzzer pulling within nine.

Valenzuela led Douglas in scoring with 10 pointsYsea followed with 13; Padilla had 10 and Diego Galindo and Menduette each contributed eight.

The Bulldogs, 10-12, have three road games this week. Douglas was at Buena last night and will be at Rio Rico on Thursday and Cienega on Friday.

The Bulldogs must win all three games and have help from other teams if they hope to make it to the state playoffs.
