Apaches bounce back with two wins
The Cochise College Apaches bounced back from their Jan. 12 loss to Central Arizona with wins over Pima and Phoenix College last week.
On Saturday the Apaches were in Phoenix taking on the Phoenix College Bears.
Cochise came away with a 76-72 win.
Joe Bell Austin led Cochise with 21 points, followed by Demeco Blue with 16 and Jerry Duckworth with 15.
On Jan. 16 the Apaches routed Pima College 99-56.
The Apaches led 49-17 at the half and coasted from there.
Kevin Duckworth scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers and Joe Bell Austin and Anddrew Hawkins each scored 12. Tevin Caldwell added 10, as did Ajak Magot and Demeco Blue, who also had nine rebounds.
The Apaches, 17-3, are at home tonight against Scottsdale and Saturday against South Mountain. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
Playing without leading backcourt scorer Yvonte Neal, who was nursing a nagging knee injury, the Cochise College women’s basketball team powered through Phoenix College on Saturday afternoon, 76-62.
Sophomore C.C. Rode stepped up in Neal’s absence, scored 13 points and defended the Bears’ top backcourt scorer, Antionette Miller.
On Wednesday, Jan. 16 Cochise beat Pima 72-63.
Pima led by as much as 13 in the first half, and the Apaches went to the second half down 38-32.
Pima came out of the gates strong to take a 50-38 lead before Cochise began to find its footing. After taking the lead late, the Apaches hit 11 straight free-throws down the stretch to seal it.
Madison Lopez scored 15 to pick up Welles’ slack, Tianna Brown scored 12 and Justina Prairie Chief had 11.
Former Tombstone High School standout Aj’ha Edwards had 10 rebounds.
