Douglas Rotary Club to hold benefit dance Saturday

The Douglas Rotary Club will hold a benefit dance to help save the roof of the Douglas Williams House and to raise funds for DHS Scholarships for seniors this Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Over a century of Douglas’ history can be found in the Douglas Williams House and leaks in the roof are threatening the contents within the building.

President Lavinia Spivey of the Douglas Historical Society which is housed in the Douglas Williams House stated that “the Douglas Williams House is too important a part of the city of Douglas, its history and its future to let it continue to deteriorate. It was built by James S Douglas in 1908 and designed in the unique Prairie style by Trost and Trost of El Paso, Texas. Since 1990 it has been the sole public repository of Douglas historical artifacts and photos including the Marty Dess camera collection. Besides education through its exhibits, the museum offers the public family and historical information on request and a photo research and reprint service.”

The Douglas Rotary Club every year awards $500 to both a boy and girl who have the most improved grade point average (GPA) when they graduate from Douglas High School. Students who finish their freshman year with a low GPA and through dedication and hard work end their senior year with a 3.00 GPA or greater deserve recognition for their efforts.

Doors Saturday will open at 7:30 p.m. and music will be provided by Nightlife who plays contemporary as well as Mexican music. The price for a ticket is $5 per person and there will be a cash bar for beer and wine. Menudo will be available for purchase and will be served from 11 p.m. until it’s finished along with soda and coffee. Please feel free to bring your own dinner or snacks.
