The Douglas School Board of Education moved quickly through its agenda at its Feb. 5 regular board meeting finishing in 19 minutes.

The board approved the hiring of Nicole Vasquez, Fabian Ochoa, Gus F. Enriquez and Mark Zepeda as substitute teachers; Jocelyn Hernandez was approved as a volunteer tutor at Joe Carlson Elementary; Elizabeth Cuevas and Eve Brown were approved for relocation within the school year; Rachel Melendez was approved as an instructional aide at Sarah Marley; Samantha Renova was granted an increase in her hours and DHS Social Studies teacher David Campas had his retirement date changed from May 2013 to October 2013.

The board approved donations from Scholarship America (Target) to Stevenson School; Box Top Education to Sarah Marley School; Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona to Clawson, Faras, Joe Carlson, Sarah Marley and Stevenson Elementary Schools; from Dime Drive to Joe Carlson; from Cochise Area Reading Council to Family Leadership Institute and Teen AA Group and 14 12’x21’ sectional fence panels from the city of Douglas to the Douglas Unified School District.

DUSD Business Manager Cesar Soto reported the district is still doing well financially.

Mene Gomez reported the district enrollment currently stands at 3,784 down 17 from December, 2012.

Enrollments at Clawson, Joe Carlson, Faras, Stevenson, Huber Middle School and Douglas High School are down anywhere from one to 10 students from Decembers figures and that Sarah Marley increased by seven students and Ray Borane Middle School by one.

During the board members reports Susan Kramer reiterated the fact the DUSD has an emergency action plan in place for all DUSD students should some unfortunate tragedy occur here but, according to a seminar she recently attended, it is not a good idea to advertise what that plan is because it could actually help those intending to do harm.

The next board meeting will be on Feb. 19. There will be no school Feb. 18 for Presidents Day and all central administration, maintenance department and warehouse/receiving offices will be closed.
