Three times in the past few days callers have reported that someone calls them advising that they are from a company such as Microsoft, etc. The caller is then advised that they apparently have a virus on their computer and the person calling needs to get the user name and password so the computer can be fixed and secured.
Of the three people reporting these calls, one actually provided the information and after thinking about it, contacted the Sheriff’s Office. Several support service providers such as Quest and HP Arizona have advised that they have heard of this type of scam as well.
Sheriff Dannels warns that you should never give out any information to people who call you requesting personal information, passwords, or other identifying information.
“Don’t be a victim. Please be smart and protect yourself by guarding your information closely,” Dannels said.
