Accident shuts down Highway 80

Highway 80 was closed on Feb. 12 at from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. following a two vehicle accident with injuries.


According to Officer David Hopkins Arizona Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer, a 1999 Buick failed to stop or failed to yield from a stop when crossing Highway 80 and was T-boned by a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Alvin Kamin, the driver of the Buick, was transported by air to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

The three occupants of the PT Cruiser were transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center for minor injuries. The identification of the PT Cruiser driver or passengers was not released.

On Feb. 14 Cochise County Sheriff’s deputy’s attempted to stop a green half ton pick-up on Highway 191 and Grace Ave. for overly tinted windows.

The driver of the pick-up drove through the back yard of a residence and headed north on 191.

According to Deputy Guy Hudson before the pick-up got back on the highway he attempted to ram the pick-up into the CCSO vehicle.

Once on Highway 191, at mile marker 18, deputies laid out spike strip blowing out three of the pick-ups tires.

The driver then turned on Davis Road and Central Highway where he exited the vehicle. Deputies apprehended Adaly Mendez Medina after an eight minute foot pursuit.

According to CCSO Public Information Officer Carol Capas, Mendez-Medina a Mexican national was attempting to smuggle four illegal immigrants.

The four people were released to border patrol agents for processing.
