The Cochise College Apaches and Lady Apaches each posted two wins last week beating Mesa Community College and Eastern Arizona College, both on the road.

On Saturday the Lady Apaches edged Eastern 74-71 on Ashley Mitchell’s three pointer from the top of the key with three seconds to play.

Johnishia Welles scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Mitchell had 21 and Tianna Brown scored 14.

The schedule lightens up for the Lady Apaches, 21-3, who are ranked No. 24 in the NJCAA national poll, as they play at home against Tohono O’odham tonight and face Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday.

On Wednesday the Lady Apaches beat Mesa 61-44.

Jasmine Leon scored 18 points to lead Cochise in scoring; Welles had 11.

Cochise men’s basketball

For the second straight game, the Cochise College men’s basketball team let a double-digit halftime lead slip away, only to rally in time to preserve a victory.

On Saturday night at Eastern Arizona College, the Apaches watched a 47-34 advantage at the break turn into a two-point deficit. But, led by some clutch shot-making from Jerry Duckworth, who was 5-of-9 from 3-point range, the Apaches prevailed 97-87.

Cochise, ranked 24th in the nation, stayed a game behind Central Arizona and Arizona Western for first place in the ACCAC standings heading into Wednesday’s game at home against Tohono O’odham Community College.

Joe Bell Austin had 22 points and Demeco Blue was 9-for-16 from the field for 21 points and 15 rebounds. Tim Jacobs added 15 points.

On Wednesday the Apaches edged out Mesa 66-62.

Cochise led 40-28 at the half and increased that lead to 15 in the second half only to see Mesa stormed back and tied the game at 62 with just under a minute remaining.

Duckworth hit a pair to give Cochise a 64-62 and Jacobs bucket in the final seconds sealed the win for Cochise who is also back in the NJCAA top 25 sitting at No. 24.

Just like the Lady Apaches the Cochise men will host Tohono O’odham tonight and Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday.

Game time for the ladies is 5:30 p.m.; 7:30 for the men.
