The Douglas school board met last Tuesday for its second regular monthly meeting.
The board approved the donation of 50 hardcover books, valued at approximately $600 to Sarah Marley from local author Adele M. Crouch. A $250 donation from Lynn and Deborah Marvel on behalf of Dennis Reidy to Faras Elementary was also approved. Reidy was a 1963 DHS graduate who contributed regularly to the DUSD. He passed away last month, said DUSD Superintendent Sheila Rogers.
The board also approved a memorandum of understanding between the district and PSA Art Awakenings for a program at Sarah Marley, Ray Borane Middle School and Douglas High School that will provide art therapy groups between Feb. 1and June 30, 2013.
The board also approved the adoption of an American Government textbook for DHS Social Studies classes.
There was approval given for the first reading of the following policies: 441-DGD Credit Cards; 442-DJE Bidding/Purchasing Procedures; 444-GB General Personnel Policies; 445-GCCD Professional/Support Staff Military/Legal Leave; 446-GCK Professional Staff Assignments and Transfers; 447-GCMF Professional Staff Duties and Responsibilities; 449-IHAL Teaching About Religion; 450-IHAMB Family Life Education; 452-IHBE Bilingual Instruction/Native Language Instruction; 453-IHBHD Online/Concurrent/Correspondence Courses; 454-IKE-RB Promotion and Retention of Students; 455-IJM Special Interest Materials Selection and Adoption; 456-KD Public Information and Communication; 457-KHC Distribution/Posting of Promotional Materials; 458-GBAB Medical Marijuana Standards and Conditions for Employees; 459-GBECA Nonmedical Use or Abuse of Drugs or Alcohol; 460-GBECA Drugs and Alcohol use by Students; 461-KFA Public Conduct on School Property; B1700 BEDB Agenda and I-6400 IJNDB Use of Technology Resources in Instruction.
These revisions are mandated by the ASBA (Arizona School Board Association).
The board approved the hiring of Ondrea Estrada as a district wide substitute teacher; volunteers Ray Shelton for the girls tennis program and Mishell Quinonez for the girls softball program both at DHS; Tizoc Anaya as a computer tech and Mark Zepeda as a part-time instructional aide.
Resignations/retirements were granted for James Weime as a CTE Law Enforcement teacher effective May 23, 2013; John Bess as a alternative to suspension monitor at DHS effective Feb. 25 and Robert Marrufo, transportation, effective April 25, 2013.
DHS cafeteria worker Soila Chacon had her hours increased and Eddie Molina at Faras; Ana Ingiosi of Ray Borane and Cynthia Encinas of Clawson were all approved to occupy hard to fill positions within the district.
The board also approved the following teachers for tutoring before or after school at each of the following schools: Angelica Chavez and Kari Acosta – Clawson; Chaelyn Fredrickson – Joe Carlson; Eve Brown-Ray Borane and Sarah Docini and Patricia Messner at Stevenson.
There were also two executive sessions to discuss student discipline matters.
The next regular board meeting will be March 5 at 5:30 p.m. The March 19 board meeting has been cancelled and the Spring Break Holiday will run March 10-14.
