A former Customs and Border Protection Officer from Douglas has been found guilty of drug charges.

Luis Vasquez, 33, was found guilty by a federal jury last Thursday in a Federal Court room in Tucson.

Evidence showed that on at least two occassions, Vasquez, along with other members of the conspiracy, used his position as an inspector at the Douglas port of entry to allow over 1,200 pounds of marijuana into the United States from Mexico without inspection.

He was found guilty on all counts, including conspiracy to import marijuana, unlawful importation of marijuana, conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana.

The convictions carry a maximum penalty of 40 years imprisonment, a $5,000,000 fine or both.

Vasquez is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service while awaiting sentencing, which will be on April 29.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection and Office of the Inspector General and the Douglas Police Department.

" Let's not be so judgemental in throwing other officers/agents in the same boat as Luis. He was a bad apple in his days at the prison, which should have sent a red flag to the background investigator. On the other hand how is it that the biggest drug dealer in douglas that run a rim shop here that has very little customers survive for so long? Could it be that people accept it? or could it be the fact that he is with the daughter of the person who is usually in charge of investigations for the police dept. and the nice of a chief of the port of entry; Am i the only one that see a problem with this? DPD, ICE, whoever do your job! and clean this town up! "

" The culture of corruption lives on in Douglas. These people have no moral foundation and the people around them (friends and family) refuse to do anything about it. They are just as guilty as the corrupt officers. Douglas gets what it deserves. Deep inside they believe that corruption is good and they want to live like animals. "

" The pathetic part of all this is that there are some officers here at the Port of Entry who still support him. Even though he was convicted and the evidence against him was overwhelming (those of us CBPO's here in Douglas know what a lot of the evidence consisted of. These few officers refuse to call him a criminal and still believe in his innocence even though it was proven he was not innocent. Many of them are simply in denial because Luis was their "friend" and they refuse to believe that he was dirty. What bothers me is that they still defend him. This is totally unacceptable and those who continue to defend him (officers or not) are just as bad as he is. Should make people wonder what those officers who defend him are doing. "

He was very well raise by his both Parents I know this for a fact! And have not seen him for over 14 years, and to just come across this...sure does make me feel very sorry. Not for him but for his family. He knew all the way along what he was getting himself into if ever being caught. and now here are the consequences. make that be a lesson to a lot of us out there Do the wrong things and you will definitely end in the wrong place... " If your statement is true and you know this for a fact why didn't you report it? Let me guess its not your job or your problem. Well let me tell you that's why Douglas has the problems it does. People in Douglas seem to forget this is not Mexico. The reason Mexico has the problems it does is because everyone is to scared to do their civil duty. Luis did what he did and got caught, I guarantee you he is not rich and if he is he will have several years to think about it. As for the people who claim local law enforcement are all “dirty” or drug smugglers, Luis would have not gotten convicted if it was not for Douglas PD and CBP officers who testified against him. "

" Douglas Owl is right! The problem is that it's the Culture of Corruption that comes from Mexico. Because the cultures here in border towns are connected it spills over to the U.S. They grow up with friends and family in the "business" and think it's ok to do here what they see done in Mexico. It is very easy for them to get enticed into doing something themselves or looking the other way because they don't want to report their friend or family member. What they don't understand is that here in the U.S. there are laws to be followed and there are consequences. Then there are those like Luis who are already involved before they take the job. They enter into these positions with the INTENT of using the badge to cover their activities. For non-natives they usually meet someone who is smuggler and it starts from there. There are all the same: TRAITORS. "

" I am glad that another bad apple was finally removed from Customs. Now we know that this man has a price, maybe his children will learn what his price was. Luis was seen by many of his peers as a good officer but that was just a "cover up". We now know who he really was. Finally a special congratulations to DPD and FBI for a job WELL DONE. "

" Wake-up, Douglas people!!!!! Let’s do the math, in the past; the local news has announced the arrest of several ex-employees of the AZ DOC (Douglas natives) being arrested for drug smuggling at the Border Patrol check points and at the Douglas Port of Entry (different faces, same game). Better yet, another Douglas native formerly employed at the U.S. Post Office, and now another hit, a Douglas native that threw away his career at the Port of Entry… what is next!!! The Sherriff’s Office or the Douglas Police Department, Fire Department or Schools. Here is a concept that works STOP selling your soul to the devil. Douglas and Pirtleville are decent people that come from good families… I’m not going to bash Luis Carlos Vasquez; he is paying for his shame for the rest of his life along with his family (Mom and Dad included). What I am saying is Greed is not the answer. Some say, “Either you’re born with Integrity or you’re not.” I say we all are born with Integrity and know right from wrong…. Don’t carrying that SHAME.
Attention: All Douglas natives employed to serve the public (Port of Entry, Border Patrol, Fire, Schools, Police, City Public Workers, City Hall) …remember, you work for the people; To Protect and to Serve the community NOT yourself. Enough Said. "

" To "Upset" the written test is part of the process and it's not difficult. If people can't pass then they should study harder. You can't blame a simple written test as the reason some people fail. It's the person's fault not the test. Luis was a bad apple, there may be more there may not. The good thing is that he got caught and will hopefully get what he deserves. "
