Time capsule sealed till 2062

Representatives from Douglas’ Centennial Committee as well as various civic organizations in Douglas met Thursday at the Douglas Government Center to seal a time capsule that was set up as part of Douglas’ Centennial Celebration.

Jael Kalea, one of the organizers of the event said the time capsule contains letters from various residents, pictures of Douglas 100 years ago as well as new pictures, a scrap book of Douglas.

“We had a couple of organizations who really helped out,” she said. “The Sahuaro Girl Scouts as well as local citizens stepped up and contributed items.”

The capsule will be reopened on Valentines Day, 2062 which will also be Arizona’s 150th anniversary. For the time being it will remain in the Government Center on G Ave.

Kalea said the Cochise College welding department helped in the design and creation of the time capsule and Hal Harris helped design not only the stand the capsule sits on but also the frame that will eventually hold the key.

“I am the centennial chair but I could not have done this without the assistance of every member on the centennial committee,” Kalia said.

The City of Douglas as well as the Douglas Rotary also played a role in this project.
