The spread of the flu across Cochise County appears to have slowed down. In Cochise County 407 cases of the flu have been reported since Sept. 30, 2012 the beginning of flu season.

Officials would like to remind the public a second wave of the flu will hit sometime in April. Flu season does not officially end until July.

As a reminder there is time to still get a flu shot.

“Although the flu vaccine is far from perfect, it's the best prevention tool we have, Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said. “You can still get it -- it's better late than never.”

The flu vaccine is about 62 percent effective, Frieden added.

Based on vaccine coverage surveys, 37 percent of Americans had been vaccinated by mid-November, CDC officials said. That's about on track with what was seen at this time last year.

Chiricahua Community Health Centers (CCHCI), Douglas Family Medicine and Southeast Arizona Medical Center are still providing flu vaccines.

“We will continue to give flu shots until the end of March,” CCHCI Pediatric Center of Excellence Lead Nurse, Dorothy Estrada said.

Those who are sick are encouraged to stay home and see their doctor.
