Basketball season ended last week for the Douglas Lady Bulldogs who fell 66-37 to the Flowing Wells Caballeros in the first round of the sectional tournament.

With the loss Douglas, 19-7 overall, 13-6 in power point games, did not finish high enough to land in the top 24 making it to the state playoffs which were announced Sunday. The Lady Bulldogs finished 28th out of 65 teams in DII.

At sectionals which was played at Canyon De Oro High School in Tucson, Flowing Wells jumped on Douglas early taking a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Caballeros outscored the Lady Dogs 21-8 in the second taking a 42-17 lead at the half.

Flowing Wells padded its lead with a 17-12 run taking a 59-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Karina Avechuco led Douglas in scoring finishing with 10 points. Jocelyn Vasquez and Veronica Barraza each followed with seven.

“That was a very good team,” Douglas’ Coach Clint Hill said of Flowing Wells. “Well deserving of a top 10 ranking. Our girls never gave up.”

Coach Hill said that obviously he and his girls are disappointed about not making it to state this year but plan on working hard during the summer to try and get back there next year.

“We had a good year (finishing at) 19-7,” he said. “But not good enough to continue on.”

The coach said he would like to thank all his seniors for all they left for the generations of Lady Bulldogs to follow.

“I would also like to thank all the parents for supporting the program and every other person that supports Douglas basketball,” he said. “We begin working for next year in a week open gym will take place three or four times a week at 6 p.m. in the DHS Gym and the coaches will be there to help players develop their skills. Also if you have a young lady that is interested in playing basketball of the junior high age (sixth to eight grades) please bring her to the open gym we would enjoy working with her.”
