Bulldog tracksters begin season By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch Track season got underway last week for the Douglas Bulldogs who had a tri-meet on Feb. 27 before competing in the Ted James Douglas Invitational on March 2. Thirteen teams competed in the Douglas Invitational this year. Buena was first with 138.5 points, Marana Mountan View was second with 88, Salpointe Catholic third with 83.5 and the Bulldogs finished 11th with just 16 points. Brandon Moreno finished seventh in the 400-meters turning in a time of 54.7 seconds. Jesus Loreto was seventh in the 800 turning in a time of 2:14.2. Luis Padilla placed seventh in the long jump with a jump of 17-feet, 11-inches. The Bulldogs 4x800 relay team of Israel Andrade, Ricky and Gus Melendez and Loreto came in eighth place with a time of 9:14.6. The 4x100 relay team of Brandon and Jose Moreno, Andrade and Johnny Monarrez finished fifth with a time of 46.7 seconds. The Bulldogs 4x400 relay team of Jose and Brandon Moreno, Loreto and Andrade finished in seventh place with a time of 3:46.5. At the tri-meet in Tucson Feb. 27 the Bulldogs finished second. Rio Rico was first with 84 points, Douglas had 34 and Palo Verde 26. Padilla finished second in the long jump with a jump of 16’11”. Rafael Carrillo placed first in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 17.3. Alfonso Bustamante was fourth with a 17.9. Carrillo and Bustamante were second and fourth in the 300 intermediates posting times of 44.9 and 48.0 seconds respectively. Andrade finished second in the 100-meters turning in a time of 12 seconds; Monarrez was fourth with a 12.6. Ricky Melendez was third in the 1600 turning in a time of 5:11; Brandon Moreno was third in the 400 with a time of 55.6 seconds. Andrade was fourth in the race with a 56.2. Loreto was second in the 800 with a time of 2:15; Monarrez second in the 200 with a 24.8. In the 3200 Gus Melendez was third with a time of 13.40; Manuel Acedo was fourth with a 13.49. Bulldog track coach Ron Ellsworth said he has a lot of young kids this year but he does have some good talent in the distance events. The Bulldogs are back in action today running in Sahuarita against the Mustangs as well as Walden Grove. |
