The Cochise Area Reading Council (CARC) has received approximately $7000 from the Safeway Stores eScrip program.

These monies help fund the CARC programs which benefit the parents, teachers and students in Douglas, Bisbee, Naco, and Double Adobe Schools.

CARC has purchased 1,200 books for English, Science, Spanish, and Special Education classrooms for Douglas and Bisbee. The books and materials are selected by teachers who recognize what the student’s needs are.

In addition to schools, through eScrip it was possible to support children’s literacy groups at a Chiricahua pediatric center of excellence, the Douglas library and the Douglas art gallery.

CARC has assisted both Douglas High School Family Leadership Program and the Teen AA. The council is also planning to provide assistance for presentations by authors and poets in local venues.

One of Safeway’s requirements is for the organization to spend 20 percent on fitness and nutrition programs. These funds have helped purchase equipment for physical education and gardening programs in both Douglas and Bisbee.
