Two men were detained following a pursuit through Douglas Tuesday, March 5.

According to Sgt. Jose Duarte of the Douglas Police Department, at approximately 5:50 p.m. Douglas Police Officers responded to a call for an agency assist regarding a vehicle not stopping for law enforcement.

Duarte said his department was informed that a vehicle was being followed by U.S. Border Patrol and headed towards Douglas from the east on Highway 80.

“Douglas Police Officers located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop,” Sgt. Duarte said.

The vehicle, a gray in color Nissan, fled from officers and subsequently was stopped at the intersection of Ninth Street and Pan American Highway.

“Two subjects exited the vehicle and fled on foot,” Duarte said. “Both subjects were later detained by officers of the Douglas Police Department and Cochise County Sheriff’s Department. “

Duarte said Douglas Police Department Officers did not locate any narcotics within the vehicle and are still investigating why the vehicle fled from officers. Duarte added that Douglas Fire Department personnel was called to assist with one of the subjects who was injured after a Taser was deployed.

“A bystander’s vehicle was (also) struck by the suspect vehicle, as it came to a stop in the intersection of Ninth Street and Pan American Highway,” Duarte said.

Douglas Police Department and assisting agencies will continue with the full investigation.

“The two subjects that were detained have not been charged pending the completion of this investigation,” Duarte said.
