Douglas High School was on spring break last week and for the Douglas Bulldog baseball team it seemed like they too, were on spring break.

The Bulldogs dropped two games last week by a combined score of 20-1.

On Wednesday the Bulldogs were shutout at home by Sahuaro 10-0.

Kirt Cormier was the losing pitcher going four and two-thirds innings and giving up eight runs off eight hits while fanning five and walking three.

Fernando Rojas threw two and a third innings in relief and gave up two runs off one hit while walking one and fanning two.

The Bulldogs committed four errors and Sahauro stranded 10 men on base.

Douglas’ baseball coach Gilbert Rojas said the game was closer than the score indicates and without the errors it could have been a three to four run game.

The Bulldogs managed just seven hits as Leo Montano hit 2 for 4; Cormier 1 for 3; Grant Watkins 1 for 3; Nick Ortega 1 for 3; Fernando Chacon 1 for 2 and Nick Leigh 1 for 1.

Coach Rojas added Sahuaro had a good pitcher that did a good job of keeping his hitters off balance.

“The kid was tough,” the coach said.

On Thursday the Bulldogs hosted Cienega at Copper King Stadium. The game was scheduled to start at 4 but no umpires were there and after tracking some down the game began shortly after 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead scoring a run in the first when Montano scored on a Watkins triple.

After that it was all Cienega who tied the game in the third; took the lead in the fourth with three runs and capped off the game with six runs in the seventh enroute to a 10-1 win.

Watkins was the losing pitcher. He went three and third innings; gave up four runs off four hits; fanned four and walked seven.

Ozzy Aleman threw two and third in relief and gave up four runs off three hits. Jesus Cisneros and Fernando Rojas each threw in relief.

The Bulldogs had just seven hits again as Montano hit 2 for 4, Watkins 2 for 3, Cisneros 1 for 3, Cormier 1 for 2 and Blaze Rose 1 for 4.

“We didn’t get it done tonight,” Coach Rojas said after the game. “When you walk 14 batters that’s not going to get it done.”

The coach said the two pitchers his team saw this week were two of the best pitchers they had seen to this point of the season and that includes the two tournaments.

The Bulldogs, 7-4, were at Desert View on Tuesday and will be at Tombstone today.

Junior varsity

In junior varsity play last week Douglas fell to Sahuaro 4-1 and Cienega 10-6.

Against Sahuaro Marcus Gonzalez was the starting and losing pitcher going three and a third innings and giving up two runs off four hits while fanning two and walking two. Antonio LaMadrid and Carlos Estrada ach threw in relief.

Gonzalez hit 2 for 3 with an RBI while Sergio Valenzuela was 1 for 3 with a double and Adrian Pena 1 for 2.

Against Cienega Estrada was tagged with the loss throwing two and third innings and giving up four runs off six hits while fanning three and walking two. Francisco Pelayo threw two-thirds of an inning before yielding way to Hugo Valenzuela who closed out the game pitching three innings and giving up two runs off four hits.

Valenzuela hit 3 for 4 with two doubles; Pelayo was 2 for 3; Valenzuela, Pena and Francisco Romo all were 1 for 4. Jacob Ortega was 1 for 2.

On March 6 the Bulldogs fell to Nogales 12-1.

Sergio Valenzuela was the losing pitcher throwing one and a third innings and giving up three runs off two hits. Pena and Gonzalez each threw in relief.

Pena was 1 for 1 this game with a double and an RBI; Romo 1 for 2.

On March 7 the Bulldogs defeated Pueblo 11-2.

LaMadrid was the winning pitcher going three innings and giving up no runs off three hits.

Estrada threw four innings in relief and gave up two runs off three hits.

Sergio Valenzuela hit 4 for 5 this game with two doubles and an RBI; Pena was 2 for 3; Gonzalez 2 for 5 with two doubles and two RBI’s. Hugo Valenzuela was 2 for 5 with an RBI; Rogelio Luna 1 for 3 with an RBI; Humberto Del Hierro 1 for 2 with an RBI and Jake Salmon also 1 for 2.
