Five years ago, Karla Aguilar began her medical career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the Haven of Douglas Care Facility on 15th Street and San Antonio Ave.
She graduated to a Licensed Practicing Nurse and later became a Registered Nurse and was recently promoted to Haven’s Wound Nurse.
On Thursday, May 9 Aguilar was named the Haven of Douglas Caring Professional of the Year. Emily Lindemann and Magaly Flores-Encinas were the two other finalist for this honor.
“These three women embody everything Haven is about,” said Adam Brake, executive director for the Douglas location. “I’m really honored I get to work alongside you.”
According to her nomination form, Karla is a very hardworking individual, who devotes a lot of time to her duties. She has demonstrated great leadership skills and will always hold herself and her co-workers accountable.
“I’m so excited,” Aguilar said after winning the award which included a $1,000 cash prize. “This is such an honor. … I really enjoy being here. This is my family.”
Aguilar, a 2011 Douglas High School graduate. said when you choose a career that you are passionate about, it’s really not considered work and that’s how she feels about her job at Haven.
“Karla is a role model for any young person in Douglas who really wants to start climbing in their own healthcare career,” Brake said. “I couldn’t be more proud of her, I couldn’t be more proud of the other two nominees and couldn’t be more proud of the staff here.”
Brake announced that Haven of Douglas was just recently voted the top-rated facility of its kind in Cochise County.
“We’re very proud and we give the most quality care in the county for the Medicare rankings,” he said. “For rehabilitation, for acute care, long term care, we do it all.”
