Douglas man arrested on child abuse charges

A Douglas man has been arrested on child abuse charges after he allegedly assaulted a 2-year-old.

According to Carol Capas, spokesperson for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday January 5, at approximately 6 p.m. the CCSO arrested 21-year-old Mario Alberto Toscano Jr. at his Douglas residence and booked him into the Cochise County Jail on felony charges of Child Abuse/Domestic Violence.

Capas said the Sheriff’s Office was initially contacted by the Douglas Copper Queen Hospital Emergency Room at approximately 10:15 a.m. that morning in reference to a child who was not breathing and suffering from questionable injuries. Medical intervention occurred and once the child was stabilized he was transported to a Tucson hospital for further treatment.

Deputies interviewed medical staff, the mother of the child, and Toscano before serving a search warrant on the residence in Douglas where the mother and Toscano live.

As a result of information obtained in the investigation, Toscano was arrested and booked in the Cochise County Jail pending further adjudication.

The investigation is being continued by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
