Local organizations are working together to make sure no family is left behind in Douglas this Christmas. The annual Holiday Drive facilitates food and jacket drives, fundraisers and Toys for Tots.
As a program organized by the U.S. Marines, Toys for Tots supplies Christmas presents for children ages 14 and under. Toys are collected regionally and redistributed throughout the county to registered families. Recipient applications are available at the Douglas Fire Department, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Requirements include a valid I.D. with a current address, birth certificate and SSN. The child must be registered by a parent or legal guardian.
Toys are currently being collected at the Douglas Fire Department, Aquatic Center, and the American Legion. The Toys for Tots Drive in Douglas will close on Dec. 7.
Toy donations will continue at the annual Stuff the Truck event, hosted by DFD on Friday Dec. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Walmart. Toys and monetary donations raised will benefit an annual Holiday event with Santa Claus at Raul Castro Park on Saturday, Dec. 15.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., open to the public with the donation of a nonperishable food item or monetary donation. Santa Claus will meet with children and gift toys, with vendors, games and prizes, food and face painting. The Douglas Children’s Choir will perform at 1 p.m.
All monetary donations are tax deductible.
Another important cause to support this season is the Douglas public Library’s Food for Fines program and gift drive for the elderly. The library is accepting unwrapped gifts for the elderly that include, but are not limited to; blankets, socks, gloves, beanies, and small trinkets.
Non-perishable food items are also being accepted in place of a portion of account fines.
