The Third Annual Douglas Cares Kids Festival, a fundraiser to help provide winter clothing for some of the less fortunate youth in Douglas, was held Sunday at the CrossFit Douglas on Ninth Street.

The two-and-a-half-hour event featured a zumbathon by local Zumba groups Pink Beauty and Eunice Zumba Studio as well as the Cochise College Dance Club, games for the youth, food, music, and raffles. There was also a car show provided by the Viejitos Car Club of Douglas. Tata Ruben was also on hand providing train rides for the children as well as selling his ever-popular kettle corn.

Numerous prizes were given out this this year, among those being: Dinner for two at Chatitas, gift cards to JCPenney, one month free membership to Pink Beauty, Eunice Zumba Studio and CrossFit Douglas, a one-hour massage from Elena Garcia Licensed Massage Therapist, a two-hour free event by BCE and a boy and a girl’s bike that were won by Vivian Blanco and Diane Campas.

Two years ago, when the Kids Festival first began, 31 local youth benefited and were treated to a shopping spree at JCPenney. Last year 11 kids benefited.

Event organizer Ralph Robles said as a community, we don’t often times realize just how many of our local youth don’t have jackets or the proper shoes or socks needed to stay warm during the winter.

Robles said he was pleased the weather cooperated this year, unlike last year when it was blistering cold and the event had to be cut short.

“We appreciate all those that came out today, and supported this event, and bought tickets,” he said. “It’s all for the good of the community. We’d like to thank our sponsors. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”

Robles added it’s too early to tell just how many kids will benefit from this year’s festival. DUSD Superintendent Ana Samaniego and her staff will get the youth lined up at which time they will be taken to JCPenney on Fifth Street.

“We’ll have breakfast with the kids and take them on a shopping spree,” Robles said.

Sponsors for the Kids Festival this year were: CrossFit Douglas, APS, BB Dance Academy, Black Crown Entertainment, Blueberry Café, Cornelia Munoz, CSL Plasma, Chatitas, Douglas Unified School District, Elena Garcia Licensed Massage Therapist, Eunice Zumba Studio, Haven Health, JCPenney, La Casita, Nans Lunchbox, Pink Beauty, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Tata Ruben Kettle Corn, Two Flags Computer, Viejitos Car Club, Border Town Bargains, and the Douglas Business Network.
