New council members to be sworn in tonight

Newly elected council members Jose Grijalva, Mitch Lindemann, Ray Shelton and appointee Cesar Soto will be sworn in to their respective seats tonight at the Douglas City Council’s regular monthly meeting that is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers.

Soto was appointed this past Monday at a special meeting to fill the seat vacated by Ivan Huish.

Prior to the swearing in ceremony outgoing council members Patricia Lopez, Ken Nelson and Fernando Betancourt will be recognized by the mayor and council.

Action items on the council agenda deal with the acceptance of Copperpoint Insurance Company as the workers compensation coverage and Travelers Insurance as the liability insurance coverage carrier for the upcoming fiscal year.

There will be some discussion/direction authorizing administrative staff to begin working on a grant application for the preliminary engineering and design of a pedestrian skywalk at the Raul Castro Port of Entry.

New LED lights city wide will also be discussed and a resolution authorizing the execution of a contract between the City of Douglas and Alma Vildosola so that she will provide services as city magistrate will also be discussed.

A tentative budget and a date for a public hearing for the proposed budget will also be discussed.

Tonight’s meeting is open to the public.
