Penny K. Irish lived in North East, PA through high school. She attended the University of Cincinnati where she met her future husband Douglas Hosler. While at college Penny also played field hockey and basketball. Upon her graduation in 1963, Penny and Doug married and returned to North East where they lived for 49 years.
Throughout her time in North East, Penny was a high school teacher of English and history and earned master’s degrees in both. She did graduate study at Edinboro State University, Temple University (in England), and the University of Alaska. She had a special interest in medieval European history and was writing a novel of that time period.
In addition to teaching, Penny and Doug set up an artist studio working with clay. The two were involved in art shows and organizations from coast to coast; work was exhibited in over 200 galleries throughout the United States, Korea, and Japan. In 2009, Penny and Doug moved to Douglas, AZ, a town they came to love. They made many friends in Douglas and were happy to have made the area their home.
Penny is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Bob; their two children, Devin and wife Lisa; Brandy and husband Sami, and their three children; her sister-in-law, Diane Kirkpatrick; her four children and eight grandchildren. Also important in Penny and Doug’s life were Esther and Javier Cruz of Douglas, Ken and Russell also of Douglas, and Gregory Hite of Cambridge, MA, for whom they were guardians in 1966-67.
