Hello, my name is Kevin Lomeli and I am the Fire Chief for the City of Douglas Fire Department. It is my pleasure to share with all of you, information about our fire department. Our mission is to provide the highest level of life safety and property protection to the citizens and visitors of Douglas through fire protection, emergency ambulance service, public education and community services in the appropriate manner.
The Douglas Fire Department takes pride in fulfilling the mission through many services such as fire protection to the incorporated City limits of Douglas, along with providing mutual aid to the citizens of Pirtleville, and the residents of the Sunnyside Fire District, along with mutual aid agreements with surrounding fire departments and districts throughout southern Cochise County.
The Douglas Fire Department provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) covering an area larger than 1,600 square miles, which includes the citizens of Douglas, Citizens of Southern Cochise County, and at times the citizens of Agua Prieta Sonora, Mexico. Along with 911 emergency service calls, the Douglas Fire Department also provides Interfacility transports from our local Emergency Department to other facilities in Sierra Vista, and Tucson. The interfacility transports are crucial in transporting patients who need immediate critical care, long term care, and specialized treatments where services are not available in the immediate area.
The Douglas Fire Department also provides public education which includes monthly CPR and First Aid coursers for the public in both English and Spanish. Also, CPR courses are offered for Healthcare Providers, which is a higher level of training and standards for all Emergency Service Personnel Healthcare workers which include medical assistants, nurses, and doctors.
Along with pubic education, the Douglas Fire Department also provides fire prevention services through educating our youth during Fire Prevention Month. The Douglas Fire Department visits local elementary schools and provides learning materials that the child can share at home and educate all family members with the safety topics related to fire prevention.
Part of the Fire Prevention program for the citizens of Douglas also includes annual business inspections, new business inspections, inspections of daycare centers, home inspections, and special event inspections where a certified Fire Inspector assists and educates the business owner in correcting potentially hazardous conditions that may affect the employees or general public in the event of an emergency.
Other services that your Fire Department provides included, technical rescue, swift water rescue, local, statewide, and out of state Wildland Fire Response. A nine-member HazMat Team that responds to regional incidents, participates in regional quarterly training, and is in a mutual aid agreement to assist and respond with HazMat techs in Agua Prieta, Sonora Mexico.
I am proud to inform you that the City of Douglas Fire Department Is staffed with both State and Nationally Certified EMT’s and Paramedics on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All staff must participate in continuing education to maintain these certifications and are educated with the newest trends and technology involving patient care. All online staff are Arizona State Fire I and II certified, we have 26 full-time staff members with three rotating shifts. There are two on call employees, one administrative assistant, one Assistant Fire Chief and the Fire Chief.
