It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to connect with my constituents in Ward 1 as well as the wonderful citizens of Douglas to update you all on current city business and upcoming events.
The city has been busy at work for its citizens in order to bring much needed rejuvenation to the landscape of our beloved city. Council has been discussing two major projects in that effort: The Downtown Revitalization Plan and the construction of a community center. The City of Douglas is prepared to begin the implementation of our Downtown Revitalization Plan after the City Council approved a motion of action on this project earlier this year. The plan calls for the redevelopment of the downtown vicinity to accentuate its unique character and bring with it new business opportunities. The city is also determined to keep existing businesses from closing. On that note, I would like to announce that JCPenney will not be closing.
In addition to the Downtown Revitalization Plan, the city council has continued its efforts on obtaining a community center. A community center would serve as a tangible reflection of the quality of life in Douglas and would usher in new opportunities for our community. Currently, we are collaborating with the Arizona Army National Guard on a pilot program that provides the City of Douglas and the Arizona Army National Guard a joint-use facility for our community center and for their needs. The Arizona Army National Guard has expressed interest in moving the pilot program forward so it is my hope that we can secure a long-term agreement with the Arizona Army National Guard.
While we await a community center for public to enjoy, there are several upcoming events that the community can attend. The Mexican Baseball Fiesta will be on October 2 at Copper King Baseball Stadium; doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the game will begin at 7 p.m. where the Naranjeros de Hermosillo will face off against the Tomateros de Culiacan. Also, the G Avenue Street Fair will be held on October 12, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please come out and support local businesses and take part in the festivities.
Lastly, I would like to invite you to a Town Hall Meeting hosted by myself and Councilmember Ray Shelton taking place on Tuesday, September 17 at City Hall from 6-8 p.m. I would love to hear your concerns, ideas, and what you would like to see to help Douglas grow.
