Batty resigns as coach

Douglas basketball coach John Batty, shown above talking to one of his players during a game last season, has resigned as coach of the Bulldogs.

John Batty has resigned as head coach of the Douglas Bulldog basketball team.

His resignation was accepted at a special school board meeting that was held Friday, June 21.

Batty coached the Bulldogs in 1998 going 3-18. He returned in 2016 and coached through the 2018 season. He leaves the program with an overall coaching record of 11-65, his best season coming last year when the Bulldogs went 5-13 (not counting tournaments which the Arizona Interscholastic Association does not recognize in the overall record).

Katie Walker, who remains Douglas’ athletic director until the end of June before turning over the position to Angel Ortega, informed the board the position has been opened up for the head coach as well as all assistants in the boy’s program and that interviews will take place in the coming weeks.

The Bulldogs kick off the 2019-2020 season Nov. 25 at Tanque Verde. The home opener for the ‘Dogs will be on Nov. 26 when Douglas hosts Safford.

The Douglas Dispatch reached out to Coach Batty for a comment but was unsuccessful.

DUSD officials did say however that his letter of resignation Batty stated he was stepping down due to increased responsibilities in his job that would affect his ability to coach the Bulldogs effectively this season.
