Several Douglas High School athletes were honored as the athlete of the year of their respective sport at the inaugural Best of Preps ceremony that was held Tuesday, May 7 at Buena High School.
The Best of Preps ceremony recognized the top male and female athletes in Cochise County.
Douglas’ Alek Samaniego was named the boys soccer athlete of the year; Brianna Guzman was the selected the girls soccer athlete of the year, Ximena Iniguez, was named the girls basketball athlete of the year, Aliana Vega Gallego, the female wrestling athlete of the year and Litzy Arevalo, Nayeli Moreno and Elian Villasenor, were the cheer/dance athletes of the year.
Bulldog soccer coach Alfonso Romero was nominated for Coach of the Year honors and the Bulldog soccer team, winners of back-to-back Gila Region championships, was nominated for the team of the year, coming up short to the two-time state champion softball team from Benson.
Samaniego and Guzman were also nominated for the overall male and female Cochise County Athlete of the Year
Former DHS wrestling coach Tim Brown made a guest appearance at the event, introducing the John “Mac” McGlumphy Wrestler of the Year award that, going forward, will now be named in his memory.
The Best of Preps was hosted by Herald/Review Media. Participating sponsors included: Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Sponsored by: ApexNetwork Physical Therapy, Cochise College, Cochise Children’s Dental Center, Olive Garden, and Lawley Automotive Group.
The Herald is owned by Wick Communications and has sister papers in Douglas, Benson and Willcox. Each paper was asked to nominate athletes in their respective sport for this event.
Douglas High School had athletes nominated in football, golf, volleyball, boys and girls cross country, swimming, basketball, tennis and track.
Willie Bloomquist of the Arizona Diamondbacks, was the quest speaker.
