Clutch hitting combined with some solid pitching led to the Douglas Bulldogs knocking off the Buena Colts 7-4 in the home opener Wednesday, March 11 at Copper King Stadium.
The Bulldogs got things going in the bottom half of the first inning, when Diego Ochoa singled on a 3-2 count, scoring Marcos Pena. Jose Ruiz would later score that inning giving Douglas a 2-0 lead.
Up 3-0 going into the top of the fourth, Buena scored cutting Douglas’ lead to 3-1.The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning increasing their lead to 5-1.
The Colts countered with two runs in the top of the fifth pulling within two at 5-3. Douglas responded with another two runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 7-3.
Leo Felix was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs, lasting four and a third innings on the mound , allowing three runs off four hits while striking out two and walking three. Carlos Bello and Ruiz entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game. Ruiz recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Douglas.
The Bulldogs had 11 hits in the game. Carlos Bello hit 2 for 3 and had two RBI’s; Carlos Corona was also 2 for 3 while Ochoa, Felix and Damian Robles each were 2 for 4 with Ochoa and Robles each recording an RBI.
Friday’s game at Flowing Wells was cancelled for the 7-1 Bulldogs. This coming week Douglas plays in the Lancer Baseball Classic at Reid Park in Tucson. Douglas will face the Casteel Colts, March 16 at 7 p.m.; the Sunnyside Blue Devils, March 18 at 1 p.m., and the Empire Ravens, March 18 at 4 p.m. The next home game for Douglas will be Tuesday, March 24 against Desert View which will be followed by another home game, March 26 against Nogales.
Fans attending games this year at Copper King Stadium need to be aware the Bulldogs home games will be starting at 5 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. as in years past.
