The No. 1 ranked Douglas Bulldogs will host the 16th seed Mesquite Wildcats Saturday at 2 p.m. at Armando de Lucas Stadium in the 4A state playoffs.
Fans attending the game need to be aware of the price increase which is $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID, active military and senior citizens (62 and over). Children five are under admitted free.
Mesquite, 8-4 overall, finished fourth in the Desert Sky Region. The Wildcats beat 11th seeded Glendale, at Glendale, 5-2, Thursday night in a 4A play-in game in Douglas.
Should the Bulldogs, the three-time Gila Region champions, win Saturday, they will host again on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m., the winner of the Walden Grove, Scottsdale Saguaro game.
The Bulldogs have not been in the state finals since 2009. Last year, Douglas was the fifth seed and lost to Flagstaff 2-1, in the second round of the state playoffs. The last time Douglas was the No. 1 seed was 2007. The Bulldogs won their first round game 3-2 in overtime over Flagstaff Sinagua and then lost in the second round to ninth seed Arcadia 4-3.
The Lady Bulldogs are headed to Tucson to play the sixth seeded Sahuaro Cougars Saturday at 2 p.m. Sahuaro, 10-1-1, finished third in the Kino Region behind Catalina Foothills and Salpointe. Douglas maintained its 11th seed in the playoffs, and on Thursday, beat Scottsdale Saguaro 2-0 in a 4A play-in game.
The winner of the Douglas vs. Sahuaro will face either Flagstaff or Gila Ridge in the next round. Should Douglas win Saturday and 14th seed Gila Ridge upset three seed Flagstaff, that match could be in Douglas on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
