Bulldogs snap two-game skid

The Douglas Bulldogs got back into the win column and snapped a two-game skid Friday night thumping the Catalina Trojans 50-0 in Tucson.

Friday’s game marked the return of Jesus Berthley and Juan Chacon. There were however 11 players still out with injuries, watching the game from the sidelines.

Berthley made the most of his return scoring on a three-yard run the second series of the game. Joaquin Escalante’s extra point kick gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

Later in the quarter, Christian Estrella ran an interception back 45-yards for a score. Berthley’s run on the conversion attempt gave Douglas a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Bulldog quarterback Trey Rose scored twice, both on a one-yard runs; Catalina gave up a safety and Berthley had a 20-yard run for a score giving Douglas a 36-0 lead at the half.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Fernando De la Riva had an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth giving Douglas a 43-0 lead following Escalante’s extra point kick. That score put the remainder of the game in running clock mode which happens when a team is up by 42 points or more.

Estrella had the final score of the night when he ran an interception back 27-yards for a score. Escalante’s kick gave the Bulldogs a 50-0 lead.

Bulldog football coach Hunter Long said afterwards it was good to snap the losing streak and he’s hoping this will help get things back on track as the Bulldogs, 2-2, prepare for a home game next Friday night against the Silver City Colts.

Coach Long said he expects at least three more players to come back this week one of those being Alejandro Molina who has been on the concussion list since the Bisbee game.

Kickoff for Friday’s game will be 7 p.m.
