The Douglas Bulldogs wrapped up their second full week of practice on Saturday and now turn their focus towards getting ready for their upcoming scrimmage which takes place this Thursday, at 6 p.m., against the Morenci Wildcats at Armando de Lucas Stadium.
At the end of Saturday’s practice, Bulldog football coach Hunter Long announced his captains for the upcoming season. For the varsity, the team captains this year are Trey Rose, John Ballesteros and Benjamin Huish. For the junior varsity, team captains this season will be Vicente Cardona Jr., Ben Sandoval, and Diego Ybarra.
Looking back on the past week, Coach Long said things went really well and his players made some great strides in getting ready for the upcoming season.
“Our offense is looking a whole lot sharper, defense getting a lot meaner, I’m liking where we’re at right now,” he said. “The weather messed us up a little this week. Thursday, we had to have a walkthrough because of rain and lightning.”
Now that the scrimmage is here followed by the season opener next Friday at home against Tanque Verde, Long said both the mindset and work ethic in practice will be towards getting better and improving.
At the scrimmage, Long expects to keep things pretty basic and not show too much; aware opposing scouts could be in the stands.
“We’ll probably open the playbook just a little bit just to see where we’re at but I’m going to leave that to Sergio Rivera, our offensive coordinator,” the coach said. “We do want to go out and look sharp against any opponent we face, regardless if it’s a game or scrimmage. We want the fans to come out and show their support. These kids have been working hard.”
After announcing the six captains for the upcoming season Long said, “These guys come in day in and day out ready to work. They have a relentless drive; their heart is ridiculous. They bought into this program. They’re helping the coaches preach what we are trying to get across to these guys and they lead by example.”
