Bulldogs top Safford for first win of season

It took the Douglas Bulldogs just two games to give their new coach, Abner Cortez, his first win, beating the Safford Bulldogs 60-50, Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the DHS gym.

The Bulldogs trailed 22-20 at the end of the first quarter, but then took the lead in the second and led 33-32 at the half.

In the second half, Douglas outscored Safford 27-18.

Christian Estrella led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 points. Sam Ramos followed with 16, Francisco Lugo chipped in 12 and Jorge Lujan contributed 10.

On Monday, Nov. 25, the Bulldogs were in Tucson taking on Tanque Verde where they were defeated 60-56.

The Bulldogs had a 34-24 lead at the half and at one point in the third led by 12, when Tanque Verde began to battle back, eventually tying the game at 42 in the fourth quarter.

Douglas led 49-45 only to see the Hawks come back and take a 53-52 lead before a three-pointer padded Tanque Verde’s lead to 57-53 late in the quarter.

Lugo scored 22 points this game to lead Douglas in scoring. Ramos followed with 14. Estrella chipped in seven.

The Bulldogs had two games this week. Douglas hosted Sahuaro on Monday and was at Nogales on Tuesday.
