The basketball season is winding down for the Douglas Bulldogs, who have just three games left in their regular season.
In the two games they played last week, the Bulldogs beat Amphi, 63-52, and lost to Rio Rico, 56-43.
In the win over Amphi, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, leading, 20-5, at the end of the first quarter and 39-20 at the half.
Amphi closed the lead to eight at one point in the third, but the Bulldogs responded with a surge of their own coming away with an 11 point win.
Miguel Ballesteros led Douglas in scoring with 20 points, Christian Estrella followed with 11, Samuel Ramos had 10 and Josue Ruiz chipped in nine.
Two nights later in Rio Rico, much like the first meeting between these same two teams when they met in Douglas earlier, the Bulldogs had an early lead and lost it. In this game, Douglas led, 16-10, at the end of the first quarter and 28-20 at the half.
Rio Rico outscored Douglas, 16-10, in the third, pulling within two, 38-36, before outscoring the Bulldogs, 20-5, in the fourth taking the win and the season sweep.
Douglas coaches have yet to enter the point totals for the Bulldogs who on Friday, Jan. 31, were ranked 33rd in the latest 4-A rankings, with a 7-8 overall record, 4-5 in conference, 4-3 in region.
The Bulldogs host Walden Grove on Tuesday, Feb. 4, will be at Pueblo Thursday, Feb. 6, and will close out the regular season with a home game on Tuesday, Jan. 11 against Palo Verde, on what will be Senior Night for the graduating seniors.
