TUCSON — Douglas High School’s wrestling team finished third out of 12 teams at the Catalina Trojan Invitational that was held this past weekend.

The Bulldogs posted a 5-2 record in dual match competition. The Bulldogs beat Bisbee 52-18, defeated Catalina 58-12, downed Cholla 42-30, thumped St. Augustine Catholic, 60-6, and edged Sahuaro, 48-36, for third place. Douglas lost to Safford, 58-18, and Flowing Wells 48-30.

Albert Ambriz won the 106-pound weight class and was named the outstanding wrestler in his weight division.

Sergio Zuniga won his 120-pound weight class. Andre de la Cruz finished second at 113; Daniel Bacaparra was third at 220; Damian Aguilar and Leo Romero at 132 and 195 each finished fourth; Hector Martinez at 126, Manuel Dominguez at 145m, and Ben Sandoval at 170 each placed fifth in their respective weight classes; Luis Vega was sixth at 182 and Kalvin Chavez placed seventh at 138.

In the girls’ tournament, Jazlyin Lopez (113-pounds) and Michelle Toscano (160) each placed third while Charlyin Guerrero Martinez (126), Laura Chavez (130), and Isabella Smith (145) all placed fourth

“Kids did a great job representing our school and community,” Coach Richard Ross said. “Very proud of our wrestling program and good things are coming.”

On Jan. 3-4, the DHS wrestlers were in Benson competing in the McGlumphy/Comaduran Duals.

Fourteen teams competed in the tournament. Douglas finished eighth. The tournament consisted of teams wrestling against each other on Friday before taking the top six from each class and putting them into a tournament. Douglas wrestling coach Richard Ross said he took nine wrestlers to this tournament and finished with seven, after two were injured.

The Bulldogs beat St. David, 54-12, topped Catalina, 40-24, and lost to Salpointe, 36-27, Morenci 65-12, Empire, 42-30, Desert View, 29-27 and Catalina Foothills, 51-18.

Bulldog wrestler Albert Ambriz finished second in his 106-pound class, dropping a 7-3 decision to Jordan Fernandez of Morenci in the finals.

Sergio Zuniga at 120, Luis Vega at 170, and Daniel Bacaparra at 195, all placed fourth in their respective weight classes. Hector Martinez placed sixth at 126.

Next up for the DHS wrestlers is a multi-team meet with Flowing Wells, San Manuel, Desert View and host Flowing Wells on Wednesday followed by the Flowing Wells Invitational Friday and Saturday.
