The Douglas Chargers flag and midget division cheerleaders took first place in their respective divisions at the Southern Arizona Youth Football and Cheer competition that was held Nov. 2 at Buena High School in Sierra Vista.
The flag cheerleaders, coached by Priscilla Lord, Makenzie Duarte, and Litzy Arevalo, beat teams from Willcox, Bisbee and Vail.
The midget cheerleaders, coached by De La Torre, Jessica Galaz, Isela Marquez, and Beatriz Molina, defeated a squad from Benson to win the championship.
Douglas’ mighty mite cheerleaders took second in their competition losing to Sierra Vista. The mighty mite cheerleaders are coached by De La Torre, Jessica Galaz, Isela Marquez, and Beatriz Molina.
The peewee cheerleaders from Douglas, placed third in their competition falling to Benson and Sierra Vista. The Douglas peewee cheerleaders are coached by Julie Valdez, Madai Villa, and Karina Rodriguez.
On Saturday, Nov. 9 the Douglas Chargers held closing ceremonies at Copper King Stadium. There, the players and coaches received their trophies for their efforts this past season.
League director Ken Nelson also congratulated all the teams on their outstanding performances this past season.
In addition to the flag and midget cheerleaders winning their respective competition, the peewee football Chargers won the SAYFC championship capping off an undefeated season. The midget Chargers suffered their first loss of the season in the championship game when they lost to Benson by two points.
Guy Hudson, head coach of the peewee Chargers, was named the Douglas Chargers Coach of the Year Saturday.
