Douglas High School’s athletes were honored at the Virtual Senior Athletic Ceremony Wednesday which was streamed live over the Douglas Bulldogs Facebook page.
Athletes who played one, two, or three sports this past season were acknowledged. Scholar Athletes were presented, AIA All-Region honorees were revealed, and the DHS Student-Athlete Leadership Council was recognized.
Angel Ortega, Douglas’ athletic director, announced five DHS athletes will be taking their skills to the next level next year. Christian Estrella will be playing football for the Papago Pumas in Phoenix; Alondra Lugo, will be pitching for Eastern Arizona College, and Damariz Miranda, Yunise Murguia and Deyanira Victor will all be playing soccer at Cochise College.
DHS soccer coach Alfonso Romero, was honored as the Coach of the Year, and Uriel Cortez, was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards were handed out for the fall, winter and spring sports. For fall, Trey Rose (football) and Madison Green (volleyball) were honored. For winter it was Alfonso Grijalva (soccer) and Venezia Galindo (soccer), and for spring, Leo Felix (baseball) and Lugo (softball) were recognized.
Towards the end of the ceremony Ortega presented Mitch Nelson, Douglas’ athletic trainers with the Athletic Director’s Award.
“Mr. Nelson works tirelessly during the fall, winter, spring and summer seasons making sure all our athletes are healthy and ready to return to play,” Ortega said. “Mr. Nelson has been with Douglas High School for over 10-years and still has that same energy as he did when he first began.”
Samantha Nieblas from the DHS Class of 2021, was the host for the virtual ceremony.
