Several members of the Douglas High School cross country team ran in the
Los Mezquites Cross Country Invitational Saturday in Tucson.
The event, hosted by Sunnyside High School, was run at Kennedy Park.
Nogales won the girls race finishing with 38 points. Tanque Verde was second with 67 and Baboquivari third with 75. Douglas did not score as it did not have the five runners required to score.
The girls open race, which was for junior varsity runners, and started at 8:30 a.m., had one girl from Douglas participating. Mia Verdugo finished in 14th place finishing with a time of 31:40.
The boy’s junior varsity race had just one runner from Douglas run. Hugo Tovar finished 53rd out of 55 runners posting a time of 34:22.
The Lady Bulldogs made the most of the opportunity presented to them.
Jenally Barco led Douglas finishing fifth overall with a time of 23:48. Sophia Rico followed in 14th place with a 26:05; Andrea Amaya was 31st with a time of 28:13 and Aidyn Durazo, 35th, with a 28:37.
In the boy’s varsity race the Bulldogs did have a complete team, but failed to place in the top three finishing eighth overall. North Phoenix Prep was first followed by Sunnyside and Tanque Verde.
Konnor Cormier, whose brother Kenny holds the all time course record at Los Mezquites, with a 16:07, led the Bulldogs with a 21st place finish and a time of 20:30. In 29th place was Celedonio Flores with a 21:18. Javier Moreno finished 48th with a time of 23:13; Andres Guevera, 55th with a 24:15.2 and Isaac Rivera, 56th, with a time of 24:15.7. Fernando Vildosola placed 60th with a time of 25:05, and Ezequiel Ovando was 65th with a time of 26:07.
There were a total of 72 runners in the boys varsity race and 54 in the girls varsity race.
The DHS runners will be at Sahuarita this Wednesday for a meet. The next meet will be Oct. 2 when they host Nogales and Sabino in a three-team race at the Douglas Golf Course.
