Douglas High School wrestlers Albert Ambriz and Sergio Zuniga placed third and fourth in their respective weight classes at the Division III, Section 1 wrestling tournament that was held Saturday at Amphi High School in Tucson, and have qualified for the 4A state tournament, this weekend in Prescott.
Fifteen teams competed in the sectional tournament. Canyon Del Oro came in first, with 185 points, Safford was second, with 182.5, Sahuarita third, with 147.5, and Walden Grove fourth, with 138. The Bulldogs finished 11th, with 30.5 points.
Ambriz, wrestling at 106-pounds, began the tournament beating Emanuel Tapia of Rio Rico, 7-1. He then defeated Channing Porter of Walden Grove, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he lost a 13-6 decision to Jayden Rael of Sahuarita. Ambriz went into the consolation bracket where he pinned Chris Vertrees of Safford in three minutes. In the consolation finals, he had a rematch with Porter of Walden Grove and pulled out a 3-2 win, coming away with third place.
Zuniga, wrestling at 120, had a bye his first round match and won a 9-8 decision over Zion Granados of Safford in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he was pinned by Pueblo’s Cesar Labrado in 3:10. In the consolation finals, he won a 16-0 technical fall decision over Daniel Lopez of Vista Grande. In the consolation finals, he had a rematch with Granados of Safford and was defeated, 7-5, settling for fourth place.
Pedro De la Cruz, wrestling at 113, went 3-2 on the day, losing in the consolation semifinals.
Hector Martinez, wrestling at 126, was 1-2 at sectionals; Damian Aguilar was 1-2 at 132-pounds; Humberto Lopez, 2-2 at 138, Benjamin Sandoval 1-2 at 160, and Leonardo Romero was 1-2 at 182.
“The whole team did well and we are very proud of the whole Bulldog team,” Douglas’ wrestling coach Richard Ross said. “The sad thing is no Lady Bulldogs this year, but (we) have a group coming back next year.”
