DHS wrestlers ninth at Willcox Invite

Douglas’ Albert Ambriz, shown above in action Dec. 18 against Benson, was Douglas’ top placer at the Willcox Inviational Dec. 20-21, finishing second in his 106-pound weight class.

Douglas High School’s wrestling team finished tied with Kingman for ninth place at the Willcox Invitational Dec. 20-21.

Twelve teams competed in the tournament. Willcox came in first, finishing with 246 points. Empire was second with 185, and Thatcher third with 165.

Albert Ambriz was Douglas’ top placer, finishing second in his 106-pound weight class. Ambriz, 15-2 on the season, was pinned by Landon Bryce of Thatcher in 2:43 of the finals.

Hector Martinez, wrestling at 132, placed fifth in his weight class after pinning Reed Welker of Thatcher in 4:24.

Manuel Dominguez finished sixth at 145, getting pinned by Thatcher’s Cooper Udall in 4:49 in his match for fifth and sixth place.

At 170, Douglas’ Sebastian Bernal finished fifth after he pinned Yaya Badiallo of Catalina in 2:16 in his match for fifth place.

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Bulldog wrestlers lost to Benson, but beat St. David in a three-team multiple in the DHS gym.

The Bulldogs beat St. David 47-9 and lost to Benson 50-24.

Ambriz, wrestling at 106-pounds, was 2-0 on the day, winning a 16-1 technical fall decision over St. David and getting a win by forfeit against Benson.

Sergio Zuniga, wrestling at 120, picked up a win by forfeit against Benson and dropped a 9-7 decision to Jeremiah Toyota of St. David.

Martinez, wrestling at 132, won by forfeit against St. David and dropped a 9-1 decision to Benson.

At 138, Damian Aguilar won by forfeit against Benson and pinned his St. David opponent in 2:48.

Dominguez, wrestling at 145, was pinned by St. David in 2:21 and he won by forfeit against Benson.

Kevin Ybarra, wrestling for Douglas at 160, won by forfeit against St. David and was pinned in 1:43 in his match with Benson.

At 170, Bernal won by forfeit against St. David and was pinned in 2:30 in his match with St. David.

Daniel Ballesteros at 195, Abraham Meraz at 220, and Adalberto Valencia at 285, all lost their respective matches with Benson and all three won their matches by forfeit against St. David.

The DHS wrestlers return to action this Friday, Jan. 3 when they will take part in the McGlumphy-Comaduran Duals at Benson High School.
