Douglas’ 8-10-year-old All-Stars advanced to Tuesday’s District 8 finals following a 7-5 win over the Sierra Vista All-Stars Saturday in the tournament semifinals which are being played at the 15th Street Park Little League field.
Douglas will have a rematch with either Nogales or Sierra Vista, who will square off Monday at 6 p.m. in an elimination game. Tuesday’s championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. The “if” game, if needed, will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Douglas’ All-Star coach Gus Hurtado said he will have all of his pitchers available for this game including the two who threw Saturday.
In the game with Sierra Vista, aggressive base running in the top half of the first inning allowed Douglas to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Sierra Vista battled back with two run rallies in the second and third innings taking a 4-3 lead. Douglas tied the game in the top of the fourth.
Still tied going into the top of the sixth, Chris Escarcega’s run off a Ian Pelayo single gave Douglas a 5-4 lead. Pelayo later scored as did Marcuz Peralta padding Douglas’ lead to 7-4.
Sierra Vista scored a run in the bottom of the sixth pulling within two and had the tying run at the plate when the relief pitcher Rodrigo Lamadrid struck out the final batter to end the game.
Isidro Hoyos started the game on the mound for Douglas and threw two and two-thirds innings giving up four runs off three hits while walking five.
Lamadrid threw three and a third innings in relief and picked up the win allowing one hit while fanning six and walking none.
Isidro Hoyos hit 2 for 4 this game, Lamadrid was 2 for 3, Gustavo Hurtado was 1 for 3, Escarcega and Peralta both were 1 for 2.
In the elimination game that followed Saturday, Nogales defeated San Pedro 12-4.
At the District 8 Major’s All-Star tournament in Sierra Vista, Douglas was knocked out of the tournament after falling 5-3 to the San Pedro All-Stars Friday.
Douglas finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, it’s lone win coming against Nogales while the two losses came to Sierra Vista and San Pedro.
In the loss to San Pedro, Andres Hoyos and Ivan Higuera both pitched for Douglas.
Hoyos hit 2 for 4 this game, Ignacio Mata and Andrew Estrada both were 1 for 2, Andy Alegria was 1 for 3.
Douglas opened up the tournament beating Willcox 14-0 in the opening game on Wednesday, June 26.
Hoyos, Estrada and Diego Lopez all pitched for Douglas this game.
Higuera and Estrada each hit 3 for 4, Alegria was 2 for 2 with three RBI’s, Luis Wong 1 for 2 and Hoyos 1 for 4 with two RBI’s.
With the win Douglas faced Sierra Vista, who had an opening round bye, in the second round.
Sierra Vista won this game 7-2, handing Douglas its first loss of the tournament.
Alegria started the game on the mound for Douglas this game going four and third innings, before giving way to Higuera and Hoyos who pitched in relief.
Higuera hit 2 for 4 this game, Chris Alvarado and Lopez each were 1 for 3.
Sierra Vista will play for the District 8 championship on July 9 against the winner of the July 6 game between Bisbee and Nogales.
