The Powder Puff Pick will remain in Bisbee for a second straight year thanks to a 24-6 win by the Lady Pumas on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
The eighth annual Powder Puff game between Douglas and Bisbee, which was played at Armando de Lucas Stadium in Douglas, was sponsored by the Douglas High School Student Council.
It is a prelude to “The Pick” game which was played Friday night in Bisbee.
The game consisted of four, 20-minute running clock quarters with play being only stopped for timeouts and the last two minutes of each half. Play was also halted an estimated 40-minutes after two Bisbee players were injured on two separate occasions seriously enough, they left the field via stretcher where they were taken by the Douglas Fire Department to the local Emergency Department.
Bisbee scored first when quarterback Jenitza Valenzuela hit Gaby Lopez with a 15-yard touchdown pass four minutes into the second quarter. The unsuccessful extra point left Bisbee with a 6-0 lead.
In the third quarter Douglas tied the game when Venezia Galindo scored. The missed extra point left the game deadlocked at 6-6.
In the fourth quarter Bisbee blew the game open when Valenzuela scored twice, both on reverse options and Lopez had her second touchdown reception as the Lady Pumas built a 24-6 lead.
After the game Bisbee’s coach Erin Bouley said her girls played an awesome game.
“It was a total team effort,” she said.
The coach admitted it was challenging getting her team ready for this game but fortunately everything came together and the girls played well.
Coach Bouley added after two of her players became injured and had to leave the field, it seemed as if her team became more focused, more determined to win the game.
“They pretty much won this game for them,” she said.
