The Douglas Lady Bulldogs lost to Morenci, 59-58, in the finals of the Copper Cities Classic that was held last week in Globe.
The Lady Bulldogs played four games prior to meeting up with Morenci.
Douglas led Morenci, 27-19, at the half and, 44-37, going into the fourth where they outscored Douglas, 17-10.
“We were up three at the end of the fourth quarter we called time out told the girls do not let them shoot a three, and that’s exactly what happened at the buzzer of regulation,” Coach Clint Hill said. “In overtime we were up one with 15 seconds left when we fouled and sent Morenci to the line for a one-and-one, which they hit. We had a last shoot but it fell off the mark.”
Clarissa Jaramillo led Douglas in scoring this game with 18 points. Nereyda Trevino followed with 14.
Both Jaramillo and Trevino landed All-Tournament team honors.
A schedule mix-up at the start of the tournament ended up in Douglas forfeiting its first game with Miami.
The Lady Bulldogs then went on to beat the Combs Coyotes, 43-39 ,as Jaramillo scored 16 points and Trevino followed with 14; the Coolidge Bears, 48-42, Jaramillo 16 points, Trevino, 12; the Hayden Lobos with Trevino scoring 13 points and Cariela Miramontes seven, and the Cibecue Wildcats, 62-38, as Jaramillo pumped in 23 points and Trevino contributed 10.
“The girls played well and did what we asked them to do after having to forfeit our first game,” Coach Hill said. “I’m very proud of the girls, they played their hearts out that’s all we can ask of them.”
The Lady Bulldogs have three games this week beginning with a road game, Tuesday at Empire. On Thursday the Lady Bulldogs will host Amphi and on Friday they will host Tanque Verde.
