Eleven members of the Gila Region champion Douglas Lady Bulldog softball team have received All Gila Region honors.
Coach Lorena Tapia was named the Coach of the Year. Pitcher Alondra Lugo was the Gila Region Player of the Year and shortstop Isabel Tanabe was named the Gila Region Defensive Player of the Year.
Both Lugo and Tanabe were also awarded first team All-Region honors along with Renee Urrea and Estevannie Rojas.
Second team All-Region honors went to Victoria Valenzuela, Janae Aleman, Shainah Nerio and Kimberly Salazar.
Aylin Hernandez and Emily Maddux received Honorable Mention honors.
The Lady Bulldogs, 17-1 in conference, 18-3 overall were honored by their coaches at their yearend awards banquet Thursday, May 16 at the Douglas Visitors Center.
“Wow, what a season, what an amazing ride for us” Coach Tapia said. “It was awesome. It was an honor and a pleasure to coach this group of girls.”
Coach Tapia recognized her players for their contributions this past season.
Tapia presented Rojas with the Rookie of the Year award; the Coaches Award went to Anika Peralta and Andrea Valenzuela-Parra. Andrea Verdugo received the Most Improved award; Janae Aleman was presented with the Bulldog award; Nerio was honored with the Versatility award; the Unsung Hero award went to Aylin Hernandez; Urrea was presented with the Outstanding Player award; Valenzuela was presented with the Golden Glove award; Maddux was presented with the Most Inspirational award; Tanabe was named the Lady Bulldogs Offensive Player of the year and Lugo was selected the Lady Bulldogs Most Valuable Player.
Prior to the varsity players being honored Douglas’ junior varsity coaches Carlos Chavez and Gilbert Aguilar honored their teams that posted records of 9-3 and 6-2 respectively.
Samantha Nieblas was honored as the Lady Bulldogs top hitter. Arianna Daniel-Stuppi was honored for her play this past season.
