Lady Bulldogs thump Catalina in opener’

TUCSON-The Douglas Lady Bulldogs softball team kicked off its regular season Tuesday, March 3 thumping the Catalina Lady Trojans 15-1 at Catalina.

Alicia Lamadrid, Janane Aleman and Alondra Lugo all pitched this game with Lamadrid throwing three innings and Aleman and Lugo, one.

The three pitchers combined to allow Catalina one run off two hits while fanning six and walking one.

Estevannie Rojas hit 3 for 3 this game with two doubles and five RBI’s; Isabel Tanabe hit 2 for 3 with two RBI’s; Andrea Verdugo 3 for 4 with two RBI’s; Lugo was 1 for 1 with an RBI; Andrea Parra 1 for 1 with a double; Shainah Nerio 1 for 3, and Lamadrid 1 for 2.

“It has been a good start to our season; hopeful that the girls will stay focused and keep getting better,” Douglas’ coach Lorena Tapia said.

Feb. 27-29 the Lady Bulldogs were in Phoenix competing in the Agua Fria Softball Kickoff Classic.

Douglas went 4-1 at the tournament losing to Scottsdale Saguaro 2-0 in the semifinals.

The Lady Bulldogs posted wins over Estrella Foothills 10-2; Yonker 9-3, and beat Ironwood twice 9-3 and 3-0.

“Girls played well,” Coach Tapia said. “We saw some good pitching and hitting. Good start for our season. Lugo pitched four out of the five games; won three, lost one. Aleman and LaMadrid combined for one game. The girls hit the ball well and came out with some defensive plays.”

The Lady Bulldogs are at Tanque Verde on Thursday and at Empire Friday, March 6.
