After experiencing two, tough, five set losses the week before to Pueblo and Amphi, the Douglas Lady Bulldog volleyball team bounced back last week with two impressive three set wins.
On Tuesday, Oct. 15 the Lady Bulldogs hosted 5A Cholla in the DHS gym and came away with a 25-5, 25-16, 25-11 sweep. Jacque Olivas, who played for DHS from 2003-2006, is now an assistant coach at Cholla and was back in the DHS gym for the first-time coaching against a team, she once played for.
Isabel Tanabe had six aces this match to go along with 10 kills. Victoria Valenzuela had 18 digs, four aces; Myrna Davalos had 10 assists and eight digs; Alyssa Linden had three aces and three digs; Madison Green had six kills, Deyanira Victor five kills and Adriana Hernandez three kills and an ace.
On Thursday, Oct. 17 the Lady Bulldogs were in Rio Rico where they posted a 25-14, 25-8, 25-20 win.
Tanabe had 10 kills, three aces, two assists and a block this match; Valenzuela had 25 digs and two aces; Maya Munguia had 11 assists and four aces; Linden two kills and two digs; Green, six kills, two digs and three blocks, Dianey Grijalva, 10 assists and a dig; Victor, three kills, two aces, two blocks and an assist, Hernandez, four kills; Viridiana Roman, eight digs, and Karyme Gallardo, two dogs and an ace.
“Good week for our volleyball girls, two wins,” Douglas’ coach Carlos Chavez said. “Nice to see results for girls working hard to get better. We have a tough week ahead with three matches Tuesday through Thursday. We have the first-place team coming to our place Tuesday. I hope our girls are up for this match.”
Douglas, 6-8 overall, 3-4 in conference and 2-4 in region, has just four matches left in its regular season.
The Lady Bulldogs have three matches this week beginning with a home match Tuesday against Walden Grove. Douglas will then be in Tucson Wednesday and Thursday taking on Palo Verde and Pueblo.
Senior Night is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29 against Palo Verde.
